The Captains returned to Andreas and The Grosvenor Hotel for their Spring Meal on Friday 12th May 2023.
The guest speaker was Gary Roberts who retired as the Island’s Chief Constable at the end of March having been in office for a decade. He joined the Isle of Man Constabulary in 1984 and had completed almost 39 years’ service during which time he rose through the ranks from a constable to become the first Manx Chief Constable in the history of the force. During his time with the Isle of Man Constabulary he was awarded the British Empire Medal and the Queen’s Police Medal. Following the meal he spoke on his time in the force covering the highlights and problems he had to face.
The vote of thanks was given by Donald Gelling CBE who related two of his own personal experiences in dealing with the police in the Parish of Santon. Unfortunately the Senior (by years of service since 1970) Captain John Cannell of Michael and his wife Marilyn were unable to be present due to a family bereavement. John’s place as MC was taken by Edgar Cowin, Captain of Ballaugh, who has the third longest service, having been appointed in 1992. A bouquet of flowers was presented to Mrs Roberts by Charles Fargher MBE , Captain of the Parish of Marown and Secretary of The Captains Association.
