John James Teare, April 2025

Following the resignation of William Christian as Captain of the Parish of Bride after 44 years in office, His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor appointed John Teare of Ballavair Farm, Bride as his successor.

John was sworn in on Tuesday 29th April 2025 at Government House before family, friends and a number of the other Captains.

John is the third generation of his family to farm Ballavair having been preceded by his late father John Kenneth Teare and his father, John Kenneth Cannell Teare JP.

John is not the first Captain of the Parish of Bride to have owned Ballavair. In 1831 Frederick John Dominic LaMothe, advocate of Ramsey married Miss Cowell of Ballavair and the property came into his possession. He was appointed Captain of the Parish of Bride in 1838 and in addition to being an advocate was Clerk to the Magistrates in Ramsey and an MHK in the days of the Keys meeting in Castletown. He died suddenly one night in the George Hotel in Castletown on 18th March 1864 at the age of 58.

John is an active farmer with a pedigree herd of Galloway cattle and he also runs sheep on the land which extends to a little over 200 acres. In 2013 he was the owner of the supreme champion in the Royal Manx Agricultural Show with a Galloway bull Kiondyke Powerplay. He also acts as a judge at the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire Agricultural shows.

John Teare is the fourth Captain to be appointed by His Excellency during his term of office todate . The other three being the Captains of Andreas, Malew and Rushen.
