Could you design and install a creative shelter in Conrhenny Community Woodland?
Culture Vannin and Isle of Man Arts Council are joining forces with the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture to invite architects and artists to create a unique and recognisable landmark that will celebrate UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and show the connections between culture and the arts, wellbeing and the natural environment.
Hon Geoffrey Boot MHK, Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture, said: ‘As a UNESCO Biosphere, we strive to connect people with nature. The shelter will encourage people to spend time in the peaceful setting of the community woodland, increasing their appreciation of their surroundings and providing space for relaxation, wellbeing and creativity.’
Marlene Maska MLC, Chair of IOM Arts Council and Vice-Chair of Culture Vannin said: “Architectural installations in the landscape create a strong sense of place and identity, enhance the uniqueness and character of the area and encourage people to view our land and sea-scapes in new ways – this is an exciting opportunity to create something for future generations.”
The creative shelter should provide protection from the elements for walkers and cyclists whilst encouraging a greater sense of connection between them and the landscape. It should use and promote locally-sourced, sustainable materials.
Collaborations are particularly welcomed, and all submissions should focus on both design and build, including project management.
A range of predominantly south-facing and elevated areas within Conrhenny Community Woodland providing good views over Douglas and the harbour area have been suggested, although other possibilities are welcome.
A full design brief can be obtained by emailing Culture Vannin
The project is advertised on the Government portal www.gov.im/procurement but submissions must be made by emailing Culture Vannin by 14 October 2019.
