A night of film celebrating all things Manx

A film night celebrating Manx culture has been announced by Culture Vannin.

With the premiere of 7 new films about the Isle of Man, its culture and its people, the event in Peel on Thursday 27 June offers something different to normal film screenings.

Promoted as offering stories of ‘murder, traditions, dandelion tooters, disgusting cooking & more’ the night will focus exclusively on Manx topics.

As well as the films, the evening offers a variety of things unlikely to be seen at normal screenings.

BBC Young Folk Musician of the Year, harpist Mera Royle, will perform live on stage to never-before-seen drone footage of some of the Isle of Man’s most beautiful landscapes.

Short conversations will take place with some of the people involved in the films, including some of the Manx community seen on screen and the film makers who make it happen.

In perhaps a first for the island, the night will also include the recording on stage of a short interview for broadcast on Manx Radio in front of the live audience.

The evening will culminate with the premiere of a newly commissioned work by filmmaker, Brook Wassall, and musician, Mera Royle.

Created from new music and film made together to tell the journey of one of the most beautiful but little-known regions of the Isle of Man, the Cornaa valley in Maughold.

James Franklin of Culture Vannin says:

“The Isle of Man has so many wonderful stories to be told, and so many talented film makers to do it. We have been privileged to work with some of these people and this evening is an opportunity to recognise all the work which they are doing in celebrating the Isle of Man.”

The films were made over the past year with various people and communities across the Isle of Man, including in Maughold, Peel, Kirk Michael and Niarbyl. Some of the Isle of Man’s most exciting film makers whose films will be shown on the night include Neil Corlett, Sam Hurt, Dario Leonetti, Andy Skillen, Brook Wassall and Glen Whorrall.

The Culture Vannin Film Night will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 27 June at the Peel Centenary Centre.
