A conversation with Paul Lemaire about his youth in the 1940s and 50s in the Eairy.
The Blitz brought the Lemaire family to the Isle of Man from Liverpool, coming to stay at the Eairy, close to Foxdale. The war years were difficult for the large family without much income, but the strong community of the time helped them. Prominent in this are the Winckles who ran the bakery in the terrace.
Paul recalls schools, church, Sunday School picnics, food, scouts, entertainment, deliveries, shops, the Foxdale railway, the Eairy Dam, Foxdale mine remains, funerals, characters, work and more.
What emerges is a picture of happy memories through hard times, where community was key.
