taking our culture forward

Albert Winckle recalls his life at the renowned Winckle's Bakery at the Eairy, close to Foxdale.

Bert explains the curious way in which his father fell into starting the bakery after WW1, and how there was never a time that he was not involved in it in one form or other. He describes the development of the business during his lifetime, including the growth of the buildings and the supply of mains water and electricity. He also discusses the running of the business, including its annual cycle with the tourist season, its products, the staff, the delivery round, the working day (which got up to 16-hour days in the height of the summer season!) and more.

Along the way, Bert offers a fascinating insight into the baking and confectionery industries in the Isle of Man, as well as painting a picture of a life well-lived, full of hard work and happy memories.
