Built at a cost of £41.7 million, the new prison in Jurby was the Isle of Man Government’s largest capital project during 2005 – 2008. It was built to replace the Victorian prison in Douglas and came into operation on 14th August 2008. The new institution has a maximum of 138 cells, compared with 92 places at the former prison on Victoria Road, and provides prisoners with rehabilitative and educational regimes. Photographs of the former prison can be found in the ‘Victoria Road Prison’ folder.
