The former School of Navigation can be found behind the house known as Castle Wragge in Douglas Street, Peel. It operated as a navigational school from the 1820s to the 1850s while Peel had a fleet of schooners in foreign trade. Its attendees were young men who were going to become seamen. They were taught navigation skills by John Gawne, a ‘gifted teacher’ who later ran the Mathematical School on Market Street in Peel. Plans have been proposed to convert the former school, which is a listed building, into a dwelling.
