A generous legacy from the late Professor Brian Kaneen enabled the purchase of Fairfield House and the development of the cultural centre in St John's. In 2016, Culture Vannin set up the Kaneen bursary in memory of the Manxman who lived and worked as a lecturer in German and linguistics at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, and was a great supporter of the Manx language.
The bursary scheme reflects his wish to create opportunities for young Manx speakers to develop a wider understanding of the Gaelic continuum.
There are two categories of eligibility:
1) Individuals aged 18-30 to attend an Irish language summer school such as Oideas Gael in Donegal.
2) A teacher wishing to take a school-based group (Year 5 or above) on a trip to an Irish medium school or Irish speaking event.
Bursary holders will be expected to write or record their experiences in Manx on their return.
The scheme is advertised annually. For further information, and for application forms, please visit: www.learnmanx.com/awards
