A book of Manx songs was sent out to every soldier from the Isle of Man fighting in the First World War. With songs like 'Ellan Vannin' and 'Oh Land of Our Birth, the book was given as
"...the means of refreshing a Manx lad's jaded mind and lonely spirit with sweet and tender recollections of loved scenes and loved faces in the Island home."
On the centenary of the end of the First World War, Culture Vannin published an identical facsimile reprint of the book, which was presented to every school on the Island as a part of the Department of Education's initiative to commemorate the important centenary.
Here Jo Callister, Advisory Teacher for the Manx Curriculum, tells us about the book and its place in Manx classrooms this year.
More information about the book can be found on the Manx Music website: Commemorative edition of WWI Songbook produced for Manx schools
