taking our culture forward

Clare Christian OBE, former President of Tynwald, was born and raised in Maughold, where she attended the Dhoon School at Glen Mona and was immersed in the local community through her father, Sir Charles Kerruish OBE, and her mother, Margaret Kerruish (née Gell).

It was through her mother that she came to know the Manx dialect poet, Kathleen Faragher, who lived at Glen Mona in the 1960s and early 70s. Margaret Kerruish was involved in the Women’s Institute, of which Faragher was a committee member, but she also involved in the Girl Guides. It was as a Girl Guide that Clare Christian made an appearance in one of Kathleen Faragher’s poems, Carols by Candlelight.

In this short oral history interview conducted in August 2015, she recalls her memories of the poet and the context of the poem in which she features.
