Adrian Cain with Chris de Plano from Faisean nan Gaidheal in the Isle of Skye
The week of the 19th of June saw the visit to the Island of Chis de Plano from Faisean nan Gaidheal based in the Isle of Skye. Chris was invited to the Island as part of a graduate training programme organised by Comunn na Gaidhlig. The scheme which is part funded by the Columba Initiative enables students from the Gaelic world to share ideas with each other. Faisean nan Gaidheal is an integral part of the Feis movement in Scotland and has been responsible for the running of tuition schools aimed at increasing the visibility, relevance and accessibility of traditional music to young people throughout Scotland: it is a scheme which it is hoped can be adapted and implemented in the Island. Comunn na Gaidhlig is the main agency in Scotland aimed at strengthening the language and raising its profile both at an international as well as community level. Chris shadowed Adrian Cain, the Manx Language Officer, for the Foundation throughout the week and also spent a day with the Department of Education Manx Gaelic team. The placement also included an appearance on Talking Heads on Manx Radio and participation with the Culture Co-ordinators course aimed at primary school teachers and language based meetings at the Centre for Manx Studies.
